When Something Electrical Is Not Working, Start With the Cause
Electrical problems are not always located where the symptom appears. A dead receptacle, furnace circuit, light, or appliance may be caused by a breaker, GFCI, loose connection, damaged device, or another issue elsewhere on the circuit.
Our service approach starts with troubleshooting the electrical path, identifying the source of the problem, and explaining the repair or upgrade needed before moving forward.

Safe Electrical Troubleshooting You Can Try at Home
Some common electrical problems can be checked safely before scheduling service. Never remove an electrical panel cover, open electrical boxes, touch exposed wiring, or continue troubleshooting if you see sparks, damaged wiring, or signs of overheating.
- Unplug anything connected to the affected outlet or circuit.
- Check nearby GFCI outlets in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, exterior areas, or other nearby locations. If you find one that has tripped, press the RESET button.
- Check the electrical panel from the front only for a breaker that appears tripped.
- If a breaker has tripped, move it fully to the OFF position and then back to ON one time.
If the breaker trips again, the GFCI will not reset, or the power remains off, stop troubleshooting and contact an electrician. Do not repeatedly reset a breaker that continues to trip.
First, unplug anything connected to the GFCI and make sure the receptacle is dry and shows no visible damage.
- Press the RESET button firmly.
- If it does not reset, check the breaker supplying that area.
- Also check for another nearby GFCI that may have tripped.
If the GFCI still will not reset, there may be a failed GFCI, loss of power to the device, or another problem on the circuit. At that point, electrical troubleshooting is recommended.
A breaker that trips is doing its job by interrupting the circuit. Start by unplugging appliances or equipment that were being used when the breaker tripped.
You may reset the breaker one time by moving it completely to OFF and then back to ON.
If it trips again, leave it off and schedule electrical service. Repeatedly resetting a breaker can indicate an overloaded circuit, damaged equipment, or an electrical fault that needs to be diagnosed.
- Turn the light switch off.
- After the bulb has cooled, try a known-working replacement bulb.
- Check whether other lights or outlets in the same area are also without power.
- Check for a tripped breaker or nearby GFCI.
If multiple fixtures are affected, the breaker continues to trip, or you hear buzzing or notice unusual heat, discontinue use and have the circuit inspected.
If there are no signs of heat, burning, sparking, or physical damage, try plugging the appliance into another known-working outlet.
You can also test the original outlet with a different known-working lamp or small device.
If multiple devices do not work from the same outlet, check the GFCI and breaker. If the outlet remains dead, schedule electrical troubleshooting rather than removing the receptacle or attempting to access the wiring yourself.
Stop using the affected electrical equipment and contact a qualified electrician if you notice:
- A breaker that repeatedly trips
- A GFCI that will not reset
- Burning or unusual electrical odors
- Sparking or arcing
- Buzzing or crackling from electrical equipment
- Discolored, melted, or unusually warm outlets or switches
- Visible damaged or exposed wiring
- Repeated flickering affecting multiple lights
- Power loss affecting several rooms or major appliances
Do not remove panel covers or electrical device covers to investigate the problem. If there is active smoke or fire, leave the area and contact emergency services.
